The door lock is a safety system: the washer won't release it while there's water, heat or movement, and won't start unless it's locked. So many 'door won't open' cases have another cause.
Possible causes
- Water still in the drum due to a drain problem
- The thermal lock needs a few minutes to release after the cycle
- Child lock activated
- Failed electric door interlock
- Broken handle or door hook
Safe first checks you can do
Safety: unplug the appliance and close the water tap before any check, and never open the outer casing or electronic boards yourself.
- Wait 2–3 minutes after the programme ends
- Turn off the child lock as per your model's manual
- If water remains, drain it through the pump filter first
- Don't force the handle

When do you need a technician?
If the door won't open after draining and waiting, or the washer won't lock and shows an error, the interlock or its supply needs checking.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an emergency release?
Some models have an emergency release cord near the pump filter. Check your manual and never use it with water or heat inside.
